MULTICULTURALISM
DEFINITION: "A new kind of cultural pluralism which stresses the inclusion of multicultural perspectives and empowerment of members of minority groups in all aspects of public life.” (Encyclopedia of Multiculturalism, v.4)
NARROW THE SUBJECT:
Should public institutions recognize and accommodate the many different cultural traditions reflected in the population?
Would such changes weaken the unity of American society?
Would such changes weaken the competitiveness of the American economy?
Does democracy ensure the right to retain one’s own heritage and to be secure against cultural domination?
Does multiculturalism encourage tolerance and respect among different groups?
Should immigrants and minorities be “mainstreamed” into American culture?
Do peace and prosperity depend on a strong common culture?
Should college curricula reflect various cultural traditions?
Should public education teach that all cultural systems are equally valid?
Should variant lifestyles be represented and legitimized?
Whose version of history should be presented?
Who is qualified to teach multicultural courses? Should a man teach a women’s study course? Could a white professor teach a course in black studies?
Is the politicization of American higher education among race and gender lines a threat to higher education?
Does the “Rainbow Curriculum” belong in schools?
