JUVENILES TRIED AS ADULTS
DEFINITION: “Facing strong, punishment-oriented constituencies, legislators and prosecutors are seeking to impose the death penalty on younger and younger offenders, both through the legislation they propose and the punishments they seek in trial.”
(Law and Contemporary Problems, Summer 2000, p. 133.)
NARROW THE TOPIC:
· Does trying juveniles as adults help reduce crime?
· Should juveniles convicted as murderers receive the same punishment as adults?
· Is “blended sentencing” a possible solution to the problem?
· Are juveniles who are put through the adult penal system more or less likely to repeat crimes?
