DEFINITION:  “Deliberate efforts at weight loss.  Billions of dollars are spent each year on weight-loss products and services; however, only about 5 percent of those people who lose weight maintain that loss.” (Encyclopedia of Social Issues)

·         What are the risks of obesity?

·         Is obesity prevalent in the United States?

·         Do obese people encounter prejudice in employment, education and social relationships?

·         Are Americans obsessed with thinness?

·         Does advertising by the beauty and diet industries increase pressure to be thin?

·         Have eating disorders reached epidemic proportions?

·         Is weight loss beneficial to health and longevity?

·         Do both self-administered and directed weight loss attempts lead to adverse effects?

·         Is yo-yo dieting harmful to health?

·         Is there adequate regulation of the weight loss industry?

·         Is scientific data required to insure the safety of over-the -counter diet medication?

·         Are drug solutions ethical or advisable for children and the general public?

·         Are there health risks involved in surgical treatment such as liposuction, tummy tucks, etc.?

·         How harmful is phen-fen (phenfluramine or dexfenfluramine combined with phentermine)?

·         Compare two diet drugs: for example, how does Merida differ from phen-fen?
