DEFINITION:  "A hormonal disorder in which the pancreas is not able to produce sufficient insulin to process and maintain proper blood sugar levels; if left untreated, it leads to secondary complications such as blindness, dementia, and eventually death."  (Magill's Medical Guide Health and Illness.  v. 1, p.204).
