DEFINITION:. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a rare fatal encephalopathy caused by an as yet unidentified slow virus. The disease occurs in middle age; symptoms are progressive dementia, dysarthria, muscle wasting and various involuntary movements such as myoclonus and athetosis.
