“MAD COW  DISEASE”  /  BOVINE  SPONGIFORM ENCEPHALOPATHY /  BSE  / CREUTZFELDT-JAKOB DISEASE

DEFINITION:. Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a rare fatal encephalopathy caused by an as yet unidentified slow virus.  The disease occurs in middle age; symptoms are progressive dementia, dysarthria, muscle wasting and various involuntary movements such as myoclonus  and athetosis. Deterioration is obvious week to week. Death ensues, usually within a year. It is the human variant of mad cow disease…”   (Mosby's Medical, Nursing and Allied Health Dictionary)
