CONTESTED 2000 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
DEFINITION: “November 7, 2000 Election Day. Gore receives 48.26 percent of the popular vote, Bush receives 47.81 percent, Nader receives 2.92, and Buchanan receives 0.43. Bush leads the electoral vote with 271 to 267 for Gore, but the twenty-five votes in Florida, where Bush leads, are subject to an automatic recount because of the closeness of the state result. Problems about vote recounts in Florida emerge, which lead to legal action by both campaigns. The U.S. Supreme Court determines the outcome of the election.” (The Disputed Presidential Election of 2000)
NARROW THE TOPIC:
What part did “hanging chads” play in the election?
Why was Palm Beach County’s “butterfly ballot” important to the outcome of the election?
Did Bush steal the election from Gore?
Why is the Electoral College important to the outcome of the election?
Should the Supreme Court have decided the election or should the U.S. have had another election?
Will computerized voting eliminate this problem in the future?
What role did Database Technologies (DBT Online)'s voter file have in the problems?
Would implementing the key provisions of the Help America Vote Act of 2002 ensure a fair election?
