CONFEDERATE SYMBOLS

DEFINITION:  “More than 132 years after the U.S. Civil War ended in 1865, the war’s legacy continues to divide Americans.  Lawmakers, civil rights leaders, courts and citizens are staking out sides in an ongoing debate over how, whether and where symbols of the Confederate era should be displayed.  The debate is mostly centered on the Confederate battle flag and certain songs and memorials.”  (Issues and Controversies, January 5, 2001)
