COLLEGIATE SPORTS

DEFINITION: “College athletes…find themselves in a world where they are pulled in many directions.  Their athletic programs may not be designed with education as the main goal.  Though most coaches are committed to their athletes’ education, there are enough instances where the athlete can have legitimate questions about the role that college sports should and does play in his or her life.” (Sports Ethics: Contemporary World Issues)

NARROW THE SUBJECT:

·         Should student athletes be held to demanding academic standards?

·         Do women athletes enjoy the same sports opportunities as men?

·         Are collegiate athletes exploited by educational institutions?

·         Do student athletes have unrealistic expectations for professional careers?

·         Do student athletes have acceptable graduation rates?

·         Should college sports be professionalized?

·         Should student athletes receive salaries instead of scholarships?

·         Do NCAA academic standards discriminate against minorities?

·         Should athletes be housed in separate dormitories?

·         Should funds raised by alumni/booster clubs go to the general revenue funds?
