CHILD CUSTODY

 

DEFINITION:  “Custody is a word for several different things. Of primary importance is the physical custody of the child: with which parent the child will be, and when.  Also of importance is legal custody: the right to make legal decisions regarding the child, such as where the child will attend school and what medical care will be given the child.” (American Justice, Vol. 1)

 

NARROW THE TOPIC:

·         Does the system serve the child’s best interest?

·         Is joint custody in the best interest of the child?

·         Should the federal government assume responsibility for the enforcement of child support?

·         Should the family unit be preserved at all costs?

·         What effect has the fathers’ rights movement had on child custody?

·         Should the lifestyles of homosexuals or lesbians have impact on custody decisions?

·         Is the problem of  “deadbeat dads” exaggerated?

·         What impact has no-fault divorce had on child custody?

·         Should domestic violence be a factor in child custody decisions?
