CAFFEINE

 

DEFINITION: “An alkaloid, found naturally in coffee and tea, that is a central nervous system stimulant and a diuretic.  About 100 to 150 milligrams are found in a strong cup of tea or coffee.  Regular use of 350 mg. or more a day may cause physical dependence. Regular use of more than 600 mg. a day may cause chronic insomnia, breathlessness, persistent anxiety and depression, mild delirium and stomach upset.  Heavy use is also suspected of association with heart disease and some forms of cancer.” (Encyclopedia of Obesity and Eating Disorders)
