BREAST CANCER

 

DEFINITION: “Malignant neoplasm of the breast.  Breast cancer is the leading cause of death in women between the ages of 30 and 50, and is second only to heart disease as a cause of death in women over 50. ” (Taber’s Cyclopedic Medical Dictionary)

 

NARROW THE TOPIC:

·         Discuss the risk factors of breast cancer.

·         Is breast cancer hereditary or is it caused by environmental factors?

·         Contrast the risks and benefits of treatments like tamoxifen.

·         Are mastectomies too prevalent?

·         Should genetic testing for a predisposition to the disease be used?

·         Are lesbians at a greater risk for breast cancer?

·         Should mammograms be done annually?

·         Is there a link between oral contraceptives and breast cancer?

·         Should access to experimental drugs in advanced trials be expanded?
