Selection Guidelines for Non-Subscription Internet Resources

In order to maintain the integrity of the union LINCC database, these guidelines have been established by the Patron Access Standing Committee for use by LINCC libraries in the selection and de-selection of non-subscription Internet resources. These guidelines are intended to support and supplement existing collection development policies.Considerations:

1.1 Content

  • Supports curriculum.
  • Contains accurate, factual, and substantive information.
  • Meets the criteria for local collection development.
  • Content should reflect purpose.

1.2 Authority

  • Responsibility for the site is clearly identifiable.
  • Affiliation and qualifications of author are readily ascertained.
  • Complies with current copyright guidelines.
  • Site provides means for users to make comments or ask questions.
1.3 Currency
  • Currency can be ascertained.
  • Information is timely in relation to content.
  • Links are up-to-date and active.
1.4 Design
  • Site is easy to navigate and provides clear instructions.
  • Design elements enhance, not hinder, the accessibility and content of the site.
1.5 Access
  • Site does not violate privacy issues.
  • Site has stable and reliable access.
  • In addition, selectors should consider ADA accessibility requirements, and local applications and plug-ins necessary for use.

The Patron Access Standing Committee will evaluate these guidelines on a regular basis.
